This might seem like a crazy question, but here goes. How does turf mode work? Same drive wheel all the time, or does it change per which wheel needs traction?

Neither.
It is an open differential just like in a car.
Both wheels pull all the time until one loses traction and then neither one pulls.
If you do a search for turf mode on this forum you will probably get more information than you can handle.

First, Turf Mode is not a thing.
It’s a really cool name that describes the standard operating characteristics of an open differential that has been used since 1826.
Polaris coined the name, not the differential.

It is not 1 wheel drive.
In an open differential the wheel with the least amount of traction will receive the power from the transaxle.
This is why Polaris had to install the locking mechanism, since it’s an off-road vehicle.
