What year and model? Battery connections clean and tight? Follow the positive cable back the frame and check the connection at the solenoid. Polaris bundies the small wires that power the fused box into one ring terminal. Make sure those connections are right and clean from corrosion. If it's fuel related, it could be bad gas or the in tank filter sock needs replaced. Some older models had a wire that would rub the prop shaft and ground out.

Happened again
Dont think its ground related.
Dont think its ignition switch related.

Everything stays on dash etc. When vehical comes to full stop just turn the key and were off again. I have tried turning the key off while driving and that turns the dash lights off too so i dont think its the ign switch. If it was fuel one would think the engine would sputter and cough to a stop and not just stop and coast.

If it's a 2020 or newer. Try brake pressure safety switches. They go bad and it does this. I have a Rental fleet and have changed at least 6 times on the units.

If it's the one way bearing in the Primary Clutch, the engine will die as you come to a start. But when you go to start the machine, you have to put it in H and then let the machine jerk forward, the engine connected to the transmission via the failing one way bearing, until the engine catches and starts. Then you have to keep moving or the engine will just die again. Same thing to restart. But it will get you back to camp.

Another thing that can cause this issue is a failing fuel pump. But you should be feeling this in the seat of the pants if you're moving along and floor the go pedal. Any hesitation when you do this?
In H range or L range, any difference? The 1000 fuel system is different than the 800. But after it sits overnight...when you first turn the key to ON, do you hear a whine as the fuel pump brings the fuel rail up to pressure? The lack of that was a sure sign the fuel pump was failing.

The relays in the fuse block under the Drivers seat, I recall, are all the same. So use the wiring diagram to trace out which powers the fuel pump. Then swap that relay for a different one...but sure to mark which ones were swapped. And see if that helps. Relays don't last forever.

If you don't have them, here's a link to my Dropbox folders where you can download the Polaris General wiring diagram.

Hola Amigo,
Here’s another thing to check:
In 2016 Polaris realized some of the new Generals would develop a Misfire which grenaded their engines, so they came up with this phony recall notice which supposedly dealt with a missing washer in your steering.

This allowed your dealer the opportunity to enter into your ECU a Misfire code Detection.

Here are the symptoms
  • Your driving along and your rig just shuts off
  • This occurrence is not predictable, it can happen today or three months later
How to fix it: contact Terry at Gilomens and he can take your Misfire Detection code out of your General’s ECU

Cheers Baja Charlie

Ah, Charlie, been at the tequila too much the last day or two eh?
The rig doesn't just die. It just goes into LIMP mode. And the Check Engine light comes on.
To get going again: shut the engine off. Count to your favorite number between 1 and 10, then start the engine and take off. In about a quarter mile the Check Engine light will go out. All is good, until the next time.

Terry Gilomen's ECU program I'd the fix. Won't happen again after his program is installed in your ECU.

It wouldn't let me directly respond to you responce above about the clutch bearing due to your dropbox link ....

Hello Pirate,

I realize this is a general forum but found you post on this issue, I have a 2019 Polaris Ranger Northstar 1000 with the bad bearing issue, I believe. Seems to be the same issue when it was running and I took off in gear, it dies as soon as I step on the brake. Then I rocked it back n forth and tried it again. It was fine and made it through the ride but then did the same thing after sitting.
Are you familiar with this issue and do you know if it is a costly repair? Do you know of a good parts supplier on-line? Seems to be the the primary clutch bearing and I feel like I could repair this being an automotive mechanic.

Your input in appreciated

Charlie, well, then dig this. BOSS was looking for a bottle the right height to fit in the motorhome cabinet. Her Grey Goose Vodka bottle was too tall.
So guess who's Jack Daniels Honey is now in a vegetable bottle, with the original labels, and who's Grey Goose vodka is now in a Jack Daniels bottle with all the labels nicely removed.
The woman says I make all your drinks and I know what is in each bottle, what's the big deal?

And I agree. The Gilomen Innovations ECU program is probably the best upgrade I've done on the General. Worth every penny! And Yes, I have two ECUs, one for backup. Tending to be one I led to friends for a day. Ain't had one yet that didn't send their ECU in to Terry. He's the guy I chose to do my Top End. Figured he knows his stuff...he does.

I took my 2023 XP-4 General Ultimate out for the first time yesterday and this happened to me. Cresting a small hill and the thing just shuts off. Started back up immediately. How do I find the code for this and let the dealer know?

It also slowly rolls when in park on a slight incline. No noise or clicking as others described. Any suggestions?

Sounds like it could be a grounding issue. Possibly a worn wiring harness. If there's no check engine light, there's no code.

2016 Polaris ranger Northstar dies while driving Starts back up and then it'll cut out again get it full throttle and it feels like it's not maximum power
