Clutch Options

The local Polaris dealer/shop said that the clutch on my 2061 General is on it's way out. So I am seeking some advice from my fellow General owners on what is the best option.

Can I buy one of the rebuild kits for my OEM clutch and rebuild the clutch myself? What would the members recommend for a clutch rebuild kit?

Does it make sense to buy an aftermarket clutch for my machine? Where does one buy a clutch that does not cost the earth? I know Pirate would make some after market clutch recommendations, but those seem pretty costly and not very attractive for a Canadian wit the exchange and shipping.

I know that some of the aftermarket clutches can and do improve performance and belt life and... I am a newbie to waht can and cannot be done in this situation. Thirdly, does it make sense to buy another clutch and still see about rebuilding the OEM one. Lastly, I am not even sure of what a clutch rebuild kit should look like. ome of them seem to have a spring and some weights and some little bits and pieces but the cost it $400 plus.. What should the kit coinsits of to do a comprehensive rebuild? And what should it cost for a $0.75 spring ans some weights?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer gents

Well, congratulations! You have the same General as I do. The 2016 Deluxe. I'm guessing that you bought the machine used? How many miles on the machine?
If the previous owner didn't keep the CVT housing, clutches and belt free of dust. Then indeed your Primary clutch may well be wearing out. The question is whether it's just the consumable
pieces that are wearing out, or if the major components are worn too. Way back in my 2008 RZR 800 days, before learning to keep the cutches clean...I did wear out a clutch as some of the main, fixed in place components, made contact with moving components and the Magnesium got rubbed, ground, away.
Just a quick Google search for clutch rebuild kits found Harveysatvparts on ebay selling brand new Primary clutches for $299 and says they have them for 2106 - 2021 Generals.
I'm thinking this might well be the best option for the money.
Just a thought,
Pirate

Never done anything major on my Ranger or General clutches, just weights and springs on them.

Snowmobiles... those I have done full R&R. Same clutch for the most part.

As said above, you will need some tools. Clutch puller, spider nut tool, spider tool, a way to hold it down really well (290 ft lbs of force well)

When I do sled clutches, I change 17, 5, 4, 2, 6, inspect 15 for play, and in the case of a real bearing on a General I would also change 9.

17 - $15
5 - $15ea (need 6)
4 - $3ea (need 6)
2 - $50ea (need 3)
6 - $12
15 - $25 (need 3)
9 - $40

So you will be $400 into parts if your clutch is completely wore out. Some items like the weights and the spring can be changed without pulling or splitting the clutch at any time.
You will also have consumables like scotch bright pads, specific 242 or 243 locktite with primer, and 648 retaining compound (again, assuming that stuff is the same on a General as a sled)

No #3 with new rollers?
