A group of us went to Townsend to ride one year for a bachelor party unfortunately the trails were closed (pretty early spring) but we still had a blast bar hopping in the areaI recommend staying in the Mountain, Lakewood or Townsend area. (Oconto County for map) We love that area for both sledding and ATV/UTV, lots of stops along the way if you want to run 20min and stop or if you want to run 75mi straight you can do a good loop. There is some road running but now that I know the area I can stay off paved road almost all day. Otherwise, I really like the Dunbar/Goodman area (Marinette County for map) about an hour north of Townsend, they groom their ATV/UTV trails it's pretty amazing. Less stops up there though you're looking at 30-45min between stops maybe if you get out of the towns, but nothing crazy. There is tons of great riding in WI so don't think this is it, hopefully others will chime in as well such as Toadman and Lueck!! 👍 They know the area as well!! Other places farther north are Iron County, Sawer County and Price County. All are great riding in my opinion, and there is so many more. Black River Falls is always talked about but I stay away personally, I love Oconto area because its only 2.5 hours from my home, Iron County is 4.5hrs. PM me if you have more questions I know some places to stay as well! Good luck! Also, Smiley59 is right, I've never ridden by Gillet but it's basically south on the way to Mountain area, there is a long grade going from Gillett up to Mountain area. (Nicholette State Trail)
Thats awesome I'll keep this in mine!! I was just up near Hayward sledding a couple weekends ago it was awesome!! Definitely gonna look at this when we get the G4! Thanks! My favorite area (to date) is the Barnes area. My wife's family has a cabin there and we can literally go from there to Superior, Ashland, Iron River, Lake Superior, Drummond, Solon Springs, Rice Lake, Hayward and most all points in between. If you want prime woods trails then this is it for you. There are easy "rail" trails and not so easy woods trails. The system is pretty well marked and you can literally put on 100's of miles riding however you want. People are very ATV/UTV friendly and happy to have you. One caution would be to watch your alcohol consumption, the local Sherriff's departments do crack down on "excess" which they should. If you are responsible, they pretty much are invisible, but know that they are around. Enjoy!
I should also point out that in Douglas, Bayfield and other Northern Wisconsin counties there are a great many roads also open to ATV/UTV traffic. In the Barnes area it is common to see as many SxS at local establishments as cars/trucks. Again, common sense and responsibility prevail. We are able to go from Barnes to Iron River, Cornucopia, Ashland, Superior, etc., virtually all on secondary roads that are open to UTV/ATV traffic. The only area that we had any "trouble" with was in Washburn, within the City Limits. We had ran short of gas and ended up taking a County Hwy into Washburn to a gas station. Upon leaving, we were stopped by a "Local" policeman who after giving us a lecture on County Hwy's not being open, was actually very nice/helpful in giving us directions to the nearest "open" trail and roads to get us back to Barnes. He even went so far as to have us follow him to the local trail system. Again, common sense and respect prevail. Enjoy our GREAT state!Thats awesome I'll keep this in mine!! WI frozen public lakes are considered "public" and for everyone I believe, except private waters obviously. No one grooms the lake "trails", so there is no vehicle specific regulations. You do need the normal trail stuff though to operate on them, like head lights, registration, noise compliance ect... the frozen lakes (like winnebago) are still patrolled by the DNR and local law enforcement agencies, you can still get tickets like a trail if you're out of compliance...Does anyone know if it’s ok to ride UTVS on the frozen lakes? Most snowmobiles do not like UTVS on trails but what about frozen lakes??
Silver Cliff north up to MI border is great riding!! (Dunbar/Goodman/Florence) I also love to ride down in the Mountain/Lakewood/Townsend area, you can stay off road all day and many stops down there. Crooked Lake is one of my favorite areas down there. You ride sled trails. 👍Im going to Wisconsin with some friends this summer never been there before, we are going to silver cliff area hopefully its a good time
