i know this is old, but my steel cable has broken twice this month plowing.
For plowing I bought a boat trailer winch strap with a metal hook on the end. I cut it to about 12 foot long. I let my winch line out about 12 foot, Tape the wide strap to the winch line and wind it back in. Then the weight isn't on my winch line, but carried by the wide boat strap. Works good. Don't have to unspool and respool the regular line. I also have a Warn winch fairlead that has a much larger diameter bottom roller, reducing the bend radius of the cable. If used for plowing, I like to take my expensive 50-75ft. rope off and install a cheaper 10-12ft. rope for plowing season.
I do this every year on my ATV since I plow with it. Doing this on the General looks like it would suck because the winch is stuffed so far into the front end.
