So I got down to my Toybarn on Sunday and took some measurements.
These were taken from a 2016 Polaris General Deluxe, stock, driver side rear axle.
The splined section of the axle from inner CV-Joint face to end of splines is 1.422" long. Yup, triple checked.
The splined section of the axle is 1.186" in diameter, measured at the top of the splines.
The "Spring Clip" is made from 0.074" diameter wire.
The "Spring Clip" when compressed into the groove is 1.207" in diameter.

These measurements were taken from a 2019 Turner Cycles "Nitro" rear axle.
The splined section of the axle from inner CV-Joint face to end of splines is 1.217" long. Yup, triple checked.
The splined section of the axle is 1.195" in diameter, measured at the top of the splines.
The "Spring Clip" is made from 0.079" diameter wire.
The "Spring Clip" when compressed into the groove is 1.203" in diameter.

Thus the only real difference is the length of the splined section from the face of the inner CV-Joint to the end of the splines.

Interesting!!!! Thank you for sharing

My machine was collected from the dealer for assment. Polaris approved the replacement of passenger rear axle under warranty. Hopefully have my machine back late this week.

This is good information, but your inner CV’s and the CV’s in this thread are different.
The information doesn’t apply, other than the Spline Diameter and Wire Diameter of the CirClip.

I was understanding that the issue was with the axle nearly coming out of the Transmission. So thar is where I took measurements.
If it was the other end of the axle. Then for it to come that far out of the hub, then the axle would have to snap right at the transition from splines to threads. Correct??
So where should I have taken measurements? There are only two CV-Joints on an axle, right?

He's referring to the model year of your machine (16) and the OP'S (23). The axles are different, they switched something from the 16-18's and the 19-current axle shafts, I believe... so your axle from a 16 model wouldn't work in a 23 model like the OP has...

I was simply providing some comparison info on a stock axle that comes out easily and an aftermarket axle that takes a lot of effort to take out of the Transmission.
There isn't thar much difference. So perhaps doing research to find a spring clip one size larger in diameter would prevent the axle from coming out.
That's all I was attempting to share.

I think we're on to something here...

They did change the inner CV's on rear axles in the 2019+ models. I believe the only thing that changed is the location of the clip, so the measurement that you would look for would be from tip to clip.

I doubt it would come from the factory with a 2016-2018 axle....but it is possible that they could have changed that clip location again in the newer 2023 models and the factory axle updates haven't caught up with the change in where the clip rides in the spool.

I know the brand new RZR 900 Trail models require a newer inner CV with a different clip location because of a change in the spool (turf mode related update). Its possible that this trans update may be a running change in the General models too...and the axles haven't caught up with the update, (or vice versa).

So does SuperATV make axles for the, say 2021, General? Is the clip location different than the factory axles?
If you look at the data I collected...the length of the splined section on the stock 2016 axle at the inner CV location is a bit over 0.200" longer than the Turner Cycles Nitro axle.

So perhaps someone measure the depth of the spring clip groove from the face of the trans to the groove. Then measure the distance from the CV housing to the clip groove. Are then different?
Such that the spring clip isn't in both axle and trans groove? That would make it easy for an axle to come up.

Yes, we make axles that cover all years (unless there was a running change that JUST happened that we haven't seen yet). Our clip location has to be in the same factory location to hit the groove in the spool. These axles that are falling out are probably either not seated all the way from the factory....or the clips aren't hitting the groove, which could possibly be the axle from the wrong year.

I guess it could be possible that they grabbed the older style axle...because it is still the same rear axle used in the 900 S.

Tocix gave you a thumbs down on that one. I'm certain, as he is, that these are the original axles giving them grief.
Might you be able to provide us with the following for your best axles?

Measurement from the face of the CV-Joint housing to the end of the splines.

Measurement from the face of the CV-Joint face to the center of the groove.

Depth of the spring clip groove.

Diameter of the spring clip.

This might help those with the issue to check their axles for correct dimensions.

Might SuperATV make available the spring clips you use on your best axles.

A good troubleshooting step...
Thanks,

Any idea if the new axle is the same PN?
No chance of getting measurements? Probably not from the dealer.
Yup, we'll see how it goes. Keep us in the loop. All curious.

Interesting. The axle noted is the same PN as a 2022 "rear half shaft", axle.
But no different than the original? Will be interesting to se if the problem occurs again.
Thanks for the update.

That Part number has been used in the General XP Lineup since 20’.
